The Friends of Pendower Beach first came together in response to widespread concern about the Pendower Beach Hotel site. The threat came from two proposed new building schemes which bore no relation to the surrounding landscape. Locals and holiday makers alike were horrified by these proposals and keen to give us their support.
The Friends worked to make people aware of the consequences of this kind of development. This has involved drawing attention to all the qualities that give the beach its unique character; its history, geology, wildlife, uninterrupted views, the absence of light pollution and traffic, the harmony of the setting with the surrounding area. Read our section on the beach to find out more.
By contrast our campaign on the current application for development of the Nare Hotel concerns a successful business which everyone wants to thrive. Here the issues are more complex. Essentially the question comes down to how much and what kind of development. We need to find a way of bringing together the needs of those who own, visit or are given employment by the hotel and the needs of those for whom the beach in its present, undeveloped state is a valued amenity.
